For decades, Christmas in Chicago meant a trip or two to State Street to see the big department stores. And the stores went all-out for Christmas. This illustrated talk by Leslie Goddard, author of Lost Chicago Department Stores, traces the history of Christmas celebrations on State Street. CHM Director of Exhibitions Paul Durica set the scene with historical context about the L's role in bringing holiday shoppers to the Loop. Then Leslie will share photographs, ads, postcards, menus, and memorabilia that trace cherished traditions – from the animated window displays and the Christmas parade to beloved characters like Uncle Mistletoe, the Cinnamon Bear and of course, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.  Enjoy brunch as we bring holiday memories to life.
