Guild: This Too Shall Burn: America in the Age of Wood

Sunday January 25

11:30 AM  –  2:00 PM

Saddle & Cycle Club, 900 W Foster Ave, Chicago, IL 60640

Climate change is ushering us into a more fiery age. But this is not the first time fire has visited America. The country was historically especially reliant on wood, and, consequently, remarkably combustible. Up until the early twentieth century, conflagrations struck the country over and again, in ways that startled and alarmed visitors from other countries.

Over brunch, Daniel Immerwahr, Bergen Evans Professor in the Humanities and Charles Deering McCormick Professor of Teaching Excellence at Northwestern University, explores how those hair-raising fires shaped American history.
