For those who worship, what they wear often holds meaning. From nuns in their habits to women in hijab, adornment can indicate religious devotion. The Nation of Islam and the fez are no different.
Log on and join CHM chief historian and director of the Studs Terkel Center for Oral History Peter T. Alter as he talks with interfaith activist, medical professional, and author Dr. Shakeela Hassan. Their conversation will explore her recent book, A Starry Crown: The Design of the Fez, which outlines her migration to the United States, her faith-based activism in Chicago, and the design of the iconic fezzes worn by the Honorable Elijah Muhammad, leader of the Nation of Islam from to 1975.
