Virtual Teacher Book Club Internment Package

Recommended for middle and high school teachers. Join us for a new installment of the CHM Teacher Book Club! This year, we’re reading Internment by Samira Ahmed, set in a near-future United States in which American Muslims are forced into internment camps similar to the experiences of Japanese Americans during World War II. The story follows Layla, a teen, as she and her friends try to navigate this scary new world. The book club comprises two virtual sessions. In the first one, explore the historical background of Japanese internment during World War II using our exhibition Facing Freedom in America and website. Between sessions, we’ll read the book and have conversations about it using an online discussion platform. For the second session, we’re excited to welcome Internment author Samira Ahmed, a former local high school teacher, to talk about her experience writing the book and answer some of your questions. We will also share classroom resources for our American Medina: Stories of Muslim Chicago exhibition, which is currently on view.

$50 includes a copy of the book, mailed* to you. Space is limited.

10 PD hours – Two 3-hour sessions plus 4 hours for online discussion and reading the book. Participants must attend both sessions for full credit.

*United States continental addresses only.
