Spend a Sunday afternoon in Washington Park with Washington Park Advisory Council president Cecilia ButlerDesigned in 1870 by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, this green space is one of Chicago’s most historically significant landscapes and has natural features such as a lagoon and an arboretum. Its historic landmarks include the Fountain of Time sculpture (1920) by Lorado Taft, the refectory from 1881and the General Richard L. Jones Armory (1931) for the Illinois National Guard. 

 

Set against the park space is the nuanced social history of Washington Park and its surrounding neighborhoods. Unpack these South Side stories of immigration, migration, and racial tensions against the backdrop of the 372 verdant acres bound by 51st Street, 60th Street, Cottage Grove Avenue, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.
